2019 Inter-Club Events

It was a cool weekend with some welcoming showers around the Western Cape during these hot months when Western Cape Climbing held our fifth Inter-Club Competition: Top Rope and Lead at CityROCK Indoor Climbing Gym in Paarden Eiland; and Bouldering at Bloc 11 in Paarden Eiland.  The competition opened with 59 youth climbers from WCC clubs: Grippers, Top Out Climbing Club, Rock Fit, Bishops, DreamHigher, High Adventure and SACS Climbing Club.

Chief Routesetters, Chevaan Patience (CityROCK) and Marijus Smigelskis (Bloc 11) set some amazingly technical problems on the walls.  There was a lot of excitement amongst the competitors and after a thorough technical meeting and briefing by Colette Rodrigues and Chris Naudé, Jury Presidents and Chief Scorers, the competition started.

Both days finished off with our parents’ climbing competition where a number of the parents and coaches took part; and the ever-popular Dyno Competition on the Sunday at the Bouldering event.

After reviewing all the judges’ scorecards, the Jury President made the final call on the winners who were announced at the prize giving. There were some technical errors with the macros in the scoresheet for the bouldering which caused misinformation on the day at the Bouldering Prize Giving but this has since been rectified and the final results are below.  The parents and athletes of the discrepancies have been notified.

4. Structure of events

The Inter-Club Lead and Top Rope Competition:

The Inter-Clubs Lead and Top Rope competition will run with three routes per category.

  • The Special Needs (girls/boys), Top Ropers (girls/boys) and Intermediate Lead (Boys and Girls) will start and have 1 attempt each to climb all 3 routes. They will be scored by the highest/furthest hold they reach on the route and by the time it takes them to reach that hold.
  • The Beginner Lead (girls/boys and Advanced (Girls and Boys) will start and have 1 attempt each to climb 3 routes. They will be scored by the highest hold they reach on the route and by the time it takes them to reach that hold.
  • Please note that before the competitors climb each route, the rules will be explained by a route setter. This will be done for each group.
  • All routes will be on-sight so isolation rules apply.  Once the climber has climbed their route in each round, they are encouraged to stay at their route and cheer their peers on.  They will go back into isolation before the next round.

  • The individual competitor will be taken to the route via a “belayer”. The competitor must have his shoes and harness on and have his chalk. The competitor must already be tied in and have been checked by his belayer and be accompanied by his belayer to the route. The competitor will have 30 seconds to view the route and only one attempt to do the route.

  • A touch of the hold (however slight) constitutes a try.

  • Climbers must comfortably hold the last hold on their attempt for at least 3 seconds or until the judge acknowledges in order to qualify it as a “used” and scored hold.

  • Final rankings are calculated according to the sum of all three routes top holds reached or highest hold reached.

Inter-Club Bouldering Round 1 and 2:

The Inter-Club Bouldering Competition will consist of two rounds of four boulder problems each. Final result will be the combined result of both rounds.

  • All Categories will have 30 minutes per round to climb the 4 problems.  Each competitor will have a maximum 7 attempts for each problem with:
    • 10 points earned for flash,
    • 9 for topping on 2nd attempt,
    • 8 for 3rd attempt,
    • 7 for 4th attempt and
    • 6 for the 5th attempt.
    • 5 for the 6th attempt.
    • 4 for the 7th attempt.

  • Reaching a bonus hold will earn the following points.
    • 7 points for 1st attempt
    • 6 points for 2nd attempt
    • 5 points for 3rd attempt
    • 4 points for the 4th attempt
    • 3 points for the 5th attempt
    • 2 points for the 6th attempt
    • 1 point for the 7th attempt

  • Please note that before the competitors climb each route, the rules will be explained (beta) by a route setter. This will be done for each group.
  • A touch of the hold or a mat foot dab (however slight) constitutes a try.

  • Climbers must comfortably hold the finishing hold for at least 3 seconds or until the judge acknowledges.

  • The Special Needs and Beginner groups will compete first, followed by the Intermediate group and finally the Advanced group.

5. Refreshments at competition venue

Minor refreshments will be available at both venues.
