Western Cape Climbing 2014 Inter-Schools Bouldering Competition

Western Cape Climbing 2014 Inter-

Schools Bouldering Competition

On a chilly morning in Montagu, a handful of kids and their parents arrived at the De Bos campsite to attend the first Inter-Schools Bouldering Competition.

Western Cape Climbing Coach, Andrea Biffi, and David Gerber, a routesetter from City Rock Climbing Gym, set some really tough boulder problems in the small boulder wall behind the De Bos Offices.  There was a lot of excitement amongst the competitors and after a thorough technical meeting and briefing by Chris Naudé, Jury President, the competition started.

The Qualifier Round saw some competitors struggling significantly whereas others seemed to find some of the problems suited their style perfectly.  It was great to see how the little ones showed determination and grit and still managed to have a lot of fun climbing.

After an hour’s lunch while the routesetters set the final four problems for the Final Round, the second half of the competition started.  Again, the routesetters showed their skills, enabling half the kids in each category to do well on one of the problems while struggling with the other and vice versa.  It was a very evenly prepared final.

After reviewing all the judges’ scorecards, Jury President made the final call on the winners who were announced at the prize giving as follows:

Beginner Category:

1st Place (Gold Medal): Hannah Robinson (Montagu Climbing Club)

2nd Place (Silver Medal): Jacinth “Finchie” Lapin (Grippers Climbing Club)

3rd Place (Bronze Medal): Leon Ellis (Montagu Climbing Club)

Intermediate Category:

1st Place (Gold Medal): David Naudé (Grippers Climbing Club)

2nd Place (Silver Medal): Mikela Sinovich (Montagu Climbing Club)

3rd Place (Bronze Medal): Tom van Sittert (Grippers Climbing Club)

With an even tally of medals across the categories, the winning Climbing Club of the competition were both Montagu Climbing Club and Grippers, who get to share the Trophy for the next 12 months.
