2017 Inter-Club Top Rope & Lead Competition

The fourth Annual Inter-Club Top Rope and Lead Climbing Competition in the Western Cape took place at CityROCK Indoor Climbing Gym on Sunday 12th February.  With 55 children competing from 5 climbing clubs, the climbing gym was a hub of excitement and activity.

Hosted by Western Cape Climbing, the judges were responsible for judging the on-sight attempts of each child in the following categories:

·         Special Needs

·         Top Rope Boys and Girls

·         Beginner 1 Lead Boys and Girls

·         Beginner 2 Lead Boys and Girls

·         Intermediate Lead Boys and Girls

·         Advanced Lead Boys and Girls

Our judges and scorers were kept on their toes by some trying climbs and some very close scores.  Our belayers did outstanding jobs belaying the competitors and making sure they were all climbing safely. And a special thanks to our Route Demonstrators, David Gerber and Chevaan Patience, for showing the kids some beta for their Qualifier Routes.

The routes for the competition were of a good calibre and huge thanks is given to David Gerber (Head Setter at CityROCK) and his team of routesetters, including Matt Johnstone, Natalie and Chris Hendrickse, for setting the sixteen superb routes for the competition.

With many categories having close scores, it was a phenomenal event and huge congratulations go out to our podium winners and Top Out Climbing Club for winning the Inter-Club Trophy for having the most podium winners in the competition.

Western Cape Climbing would like to extend a further thanks to CityROCK Climbing Gym for hosting the competition, in particular Illona Pelser for all her hard work!  We are incredibly thankful for the immense support we received from Cape Town’s oldest climbing gym.

The Inter-Clubs Lead and Top Rope Competition:

The Inter-Clubs Lead and Top Rope competition will start with the qualifier round.

Ø  The Special Needs (girls/boys), Top Ropers A and B (girls/boys) and Beginner 1 Lead (Boys and Girls) will start and have 1 attempt each to climb 1 route. They will be scored by the highest/furthest hold they reach on the route and by the time it takes them to reach that hold.

Ø  The Beginner 2 Lead (girls/boys), Intermediate Lead (Girls and Boys) and Advanced (Girls and Boys) will start and have 1 attempt each to climb 1 route. They will be scored by the highest hold they reach on the route and by the time it takes them to reach that hold.

  • Please note that before the competitors climb each route, the rules will be explained (beta) by a route setter. This will be done for each group.
  • A touch of the hold (however slight) constitutes a try.

2015 Inter-Schools Lead Climbing Competition

The 2015 Western Cape Climbing Inter-

Schools Top Rope and Lead Climbing

Competition

The second Annual Inter-Schools Top Rope and Lead Climbing Competition in the Western Cape took place at CityROCK Indoor Climbing Gym on Saturday 28th February.  With 44 children competing from six schools and youth clubs, the climbing gym was a hub of excitement and activity.

Hosted by Western Cape Climbing, the judges were responsible for judging the on-sight attempts of each child in the following categories:

·         Special Needs

·         Top Rope Boys and Girls

·         Beginner 1 Lead Boys

·         Beginner 2 Lead Boys and Girls

·         Intermediate Lead Boys and Girls

·         Advanced Lead

Our judges and scorers, Justin Slabber, Nigel and Natalie Dorward, Chris Naudé, Renate Sinovich, Thomas Leppan, Julian Lapin, Linith von Ahstefeld, Dante Roumega and Nicholas Penny, were kept on their toes by some trying climbs.  Our belayers, Jean-Luc Joubert, David Gerber, Colette Rodrigues, Ricky Travis and Tameka Magrath, did outstanding jobs belaying the competitors and making sure they were all climbing safely.

The routes for the competition were of a significantly high calibre and huge thanks is given to Jean-Luc from CityROCK and his team of routesetters, including David Gerber, Tamryn Oosthuizen Catherine Slabber and Ricky Travis, for setting the twelve superb routes for the competition.

With many categories having close scores, it was a phenomenal event despite its size and huge congratulations go out to our podium winners and Grippers Climbing Club for snatching up the Inter-Schools Trophy for having the most podium winners in the competition.

Western Cape Climbing would like to extend a further thanks to CityROCK Climbing Gym for hosting the competition, in particular Tarryn MacLean for all her hard work!  We are incredibly thankful for the immense support we receive from South Africa’s premiere climbing gym.
