The 2018 Western Cape Climbing Provincial Lead

Climbing Competition

The 2018 Provincial Lead Climbing Competition took place on Saturday 3rd March at CityROCK Indoor Climbing Gym in Paarden Eiland.  With competitors competing for podium positions and the coveted place on the 2018 Provincial Lead Climbing Team, the gyms were both awash in excitement.

Hosted by Western Cape Climbing, the judges were responsible for judging the highest climbed route in a single attempt in the following categories:

·         U9 Girls Top Rope

·         U11 Girls Top Rope

·         U11 Boys Top Rope

·         U13 Girls Top Rope

·         U13 Boys Top Rope

·         U15 Girls

·         U15 Boys

·         U17 Girls

·         U17 Boys

·         U19 Girls and Open Ladies

The routes for the competition were of a good calibre and huge thanks is given to Chief Setter David Gerber (CityROCK) for the routes.

Western Cape Climbing would like to extend a further thanks to CityROCK Indoor Climbing Gym for hosting the competition.  We are incredibly thankful for the immense support we received from Cape Town’s biggest climbing gym.

Prize Giving will take place on Saturday 3rd March 2018 from 05:30pm at CityROCK Climbing Gym.

We are incredibly grateful to CityROCK Climbing Gym for hosting this event, thus making this competition possible.

4. Structure of events

Rules:

Scoring will be as per IFSC rules unless otherwise stated and will be explained during the briefing session.  An abbreviated guide to the rules will be on display at the venue and in the isolation area.  Anyone with further questions is welcome to discuss with the Jury President of the competition who will be the final arbiter and clarify any rules issues.

Top Rope and Lead Qualifier Rounds:

Ø  The Saturday Provincial Top Rope and Lead competition will start with the qualifier rounds.  These two climbs will be “flash”. This means that the route will be demonstrated to the climbers by an official before each qualifier route.

Ø  The attempt will be considered started the moment both feet leave the floor and is completed when the climber has either clipped the final draws or fallen.

Ø  The starting order will be randomized for qualifier 1 and climbers will climb in the same order with a stagger of 50% for qualifier 2.

Ø  Climbers have only one attempt per route and have a maximum of six minutes per route after which they will be called down.

Ø  The score on each route is judged by the highest hold that is reached and controlled.

Top Rope and Lead Final Rounds:

Ø  The best six climbers from the qualifiers round will progress to the final.  In the event of a tie for sixth place all tied competitors will progress.

Ø  The starting order for the final rounds will be in the reverse order of their ranking from the qualifier rounds, i.e. the highest ranked climber will start last.

Ø  The Final rounds will be “on-sight” meaning that the groups will be given five minutes to view the route prior to the climb before being confined to isolation.  The route will not be demonstrated and they will not be allowed to watch anyone climb the routes nor share information about the route.

Ø  The individual competitor will be led to the route at the appropriate time by a belayer. The competitor must have his shoes and harness on and have his chalk. The Competitor must already be tied in and have been checked by his belayer and be accompanied by his belayer to the route. The competitor will have 30 seconds to view the route immediately before his climb.

Ø  Climbers have only one attempt per route and have a maximum of six minutes per route after which they will be called down.

Minor refreshments will be available at the front desk.

Qualifier Rounds:

Ø  The Saturday Youth Provincial Lead competition will start with the qualifier rounds.  These two climbs will be “flash” this means that the route will be demonstrated to the climbers by an official before each qualifier route.

Ø  The attempt will be considered started the moment both feet leave the floor and is completed when the climber has either clipped the final draws or fallen.

Ø  The starting order will be randomized for qualifier 1 and climbers will climb in the same order with a stagger of 50% for qualifier 2.

Ø  Climbers have only one attempt per route and have a maximum of five minutes per route after which they will be called down.

Ø  The score on each route is judged by the highest hold that is reached and controlled.

Ø  The best ten climbers from the qualifying round will progress to the semi-final.  In the event of a tie for tenth place all tied competitors will progress.

The 2016 Western Cape Climbing Provincial Lead Climbing Competition

The 2016 Western Cape Climbing

Provincial Lead Climbing Competition

The 2016 Provincial Lead Climbing Competition took place on Saturday 13th August 2016 at CityROCK Indoor Climbing Gym and Sunday 14th August at HangTime Climbing Gym in Durbanville.  The event was split in half with our U13 Boys and Girls (Lead and Top Rope) and our U15 Girls competing on the Saturday at CityROCK, completing their two qualifier, one semi-final and one final route all on the day; and our U15 Boys, U17 Girls and Boys and Open Mens and Ladies competing at HangTime in Durbanville on the Sunday, completing their two qualifier, one semi-final and one final route all on the Sunday. With competitors competing for podium positions and the coveted place on the 2016 Provincial Lead Climbing Team, the gyms were both awash in excitement.

Hosted by Western Cape Climbing, the judges were responsible for judging the highest climbed route in a single attempt in the following categories:

·         U13 Girls Top Rope

·         U13 Boys Top Rope

·         U13 Girls

·         U13 Boys

·         U15 Girls

·         U15 Boys

·         U17 Girls

·         U17 Boys

·         Open Ladies

·         Open Men

Our judges Colette Rodrigues, Linith von Ahlefeldt, Jenny Adams, Nigel Dorward and Chisai Brincat had to be extremely observant of each competitor’s attempt on each of the routes.  Our belayers did outstanding jobs of protecting any competitor who fell from the wall.

The routes for the competition were of a good calibre and huge thanks is given to Chief Setters David Gerber (CityROCK) and Pierce Joubert (HangTime) for the routes.

Western Cape Climbing would like to extend a further thanks to CityROCK Indoor Climbing Gym and HangTime Durbanville Climbing Gym for hosting the competition.  We are incredibly thankful for the immense support we received from Cape Town’s climbing gyms.

The Youth Provincial Lead Competition:

The Youth Provincial Lead competition will start with the qualifier rounds.

Ø  The U17 (girls/boys) will start and have 1 attempt each to climb 1 route. They will be scored by the highest hold they reach on the route and by the time it takes them to reach that hold.

Ø  The U19 (girls/boys) will start and have 1 attempt each to climb 1 route. They will be scored by the highest hold they reach on the route and by the time it takes them to reach that hold.

  • Please note that before the competitors climb each route, the rules will be explained (beta) by a route setter. This will be done for each group.
  • A touch of the hold (however slight) constitutes a try.

  • Climbers must comfortably hold the last hold on their attempt for at least 3 seconds or until the judge acknowledges in order to qualify it as a “used” and scored hold.
